For the second time in 24 hours, someone’s home has collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, according to the National Park Service. The latest was at 23009 G. A. Kohler Court in Rodanthe, which vanished after sunset Friday, Sept. 20, Cape Hatteras National Seashore reports.

Since 2020, nine privately-owned oceanfront homes have collapsed on Rodanthe beaches due to storms, tides and rapidly rising sea levels.

RODANTHE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Cleanup is underway after another Outer Banks home collapsed into the ocean Friday morning. It happened at Ga Kohler Court in Rodanthe. So far, the ocean has taken eight Outer Banks homes since 2020, but two in just the last six weeks.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore said the unoccupied oceanfront home fell early Sept. 20 in Rodanthe, a roughly 215-mile drive southeast from Raleigh. The house is the eighth to collapse in the area during the past four years.

No injuries were reported. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore urged visitors to avoid the beach and stay out of the water near the north end of Rodanthe. "Dangerous debris may be present on the beach and in the water to the north and south of the collapse site,

A third home has collapsed along Cape Hatteras National Seashore, highlighting the ongoing threat of erosion and rising sea levels to North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The unoccupied house in northern Rodanthe tumbled into the water in the early morning hours, damaging the house next door with debris, the National Park Service said.

This week, with the presence of high surf and winds, another handful of houses are being monitored of potentially being swept away by the ocean.

Eight homes have fallen into the ocean in Rodanthe, N.C., since 2020, and more in the Outer Banks remain vulnerable to higher tides and looming storms.
